Product Overview
You've got a file. Maybe you drew it, maybe you paid someone to draw it, maybe it came off a scan of a bracket that snapped. What you don't have is a printer, the time to babysit one, or the patience to work out why the first two attempts peeled off the bed at 2am.
Send it through the form above. We'll open it, tell you whether it will print, what it will cost and when you'll have it. Submitting a file is free and commits you to nothing — there's no payment at this step, and you'll have a real price before you decide anything.
Essential 3D Prints is an Australian 3D printing service. We print from customer-supplied model files in PETG, PLA, ASA, ABS and carbon fibre reinforced filaments, and post Australia-wide.
What happens after you send it
- We open your file and check it. Usually within 2–4 business days. We look for the things that ruin prints: wrong scale, broken geometry, walls too thin to survive, detail too fine to show up, shapes that need more support material than part.
- We email you a quote. Material, colour, quantity, price and a dispatch estimate, in writing. If your file needs work before it can be printed, that's in there too — costed separately, so you can see exactly what you're paying for.
- You approve and pay. Payment comes before we start preparation work — file repair, slicing, material and printer setup — as set out in our Terms and Conditions.
- We print it, check it and post it. Every part gets looked over before it's packed. Parcels go out tracked, Australia-wide.
Will my file actually print?
Often, not exactly as supplied — and that's normal. Most files we receive need something: a scale correction, a hole in the mesh patched, a thin wall thickened, a tall thin part split so it doesn't snap off mid-print.
Small fixes are usually just part of the job. If your file needs real work — redesign, substantial repair, splitting into sections — we'll tell you what's involved and what it costs before we touch it. You will never get an invoice for work you didn't agree to.
If a file can't be printed sensibly at all, we'll say so plainly rather than take your money for something that won't work.
What we need from you
- One model file. STL, 3MF, OBJ, STEP or SVG. If your object is an assembly of several parts, export it as a single 3MF or STEP — both carry multiple parts in one file. We don't accept ZIP archives, so if a set genuinely can't be exported as one file, send us a download link instead.
- Scale. Millimetres. If your file carries no unit data, tell us the real-world measurement of one feature and we'll scale to match.
- What the part actually has to do. This one matters most. A display piece and a bracket that takes weight get printed very differently from the same file.
- Measurements, if it has to fit something. We print to the file and the numbers you give us. We can't measure your fixture from here, and a part that fits the file but not the fixture is still a part that doesn't fit. A digital caliper is ideal; a ruler held square will usually do.
There's no real size limit. Anything that fits on the print bed comes out in one piece. Anything larger gets split into sections and joined with designed-in alignment pins — planned into the model, not improvised afterwards. Splitting adds some design time and leaves a visible join line, and it isn't right for every part: if a seam has to be watertight or carry load, that's a conversation rather than an assumption. Send the file and we'll tell you which category yours falls into.
One file per enquiry, up to 250 MB. If yours is larger, or you have a set of parts that won't export as one file, email us a download link — Google Drive, Dropbox, WeTransfer, whatever you already use — at admin@essential3dprints.com.au. Don't try to attach a large model to an email; it won't arrive.
Materials
Tell us what the part has to survive and we'll pick for you. Broadly:
- PETG — our default for anything practical. Tougher and less brittle than PLA, and it doesn't mind humidity or hot water.
- PLA — the finest detail and by far the widest colour range. Best for display pieces, models and indoor organising. It softens in a hot car.
- ASA — the most UV-stable filament we run, and what we'd reach for if sunlight is part of the picture. Narrower colour range.
- ABS — heat tolerant, and the easiest of these to glue or vapour-smooth. It yellows and goes brittle under UV, so ASA is usually the better pick unless you specifically want the finish.
Not every material suits every shape. Tall thin parts, big flat sections and fine detail all behave differently depending on what they're printed in, and we'll tell you if your first choice is going to fight the geometry.
Colour is yours to choose at no extra cost, within what each material offers. PLA has the widest range by a distance and PETG isn't far behind. ASA and ABS come in a narrower palette. Want something outside the usual range? Ask before you order and we'll check what we can get in — metallic and silk filaments are worth asking about for medals, trophies and awards, where they do a genuinely good job.
Carbon fibre reinforced options
Most of the materials above are also available with carbon fibre reinforcement. The base plastic stays the same — chopped carbon fibre is blended into it, so a reinforced PETG still behaves broadly like PETG, just stiffer.
What it buys you is rigidity and dimensional stability: reinforced parts hold their shape better under load and resist warping on large flat sections. What it costs you is worth knowing. Stiffer means it flexes less, which is not the same as being harder to break — reinforced parts tend to crack rather than bend. Fine detail comes out softer, and the finish is matte with a visible fibre texture rather than glossy. Colour choice is narrower than plain filament, though not as narrow as people expect.
If you think your part needs it, say so and we'll tell you honestly whether it's worth the difference for what you're making. Plenty of parts people assume need reinforcement are better off in plain PETG.
Will it survive outside, in a car, in heat, or under load?
Some of the materials above handle heat and sunlight considerably better than others, and we'll always pick the best one available for the job. But better isn't the same as rated for it. Outdoor exposure, automotive use, high temperatures, water pressure, load-bearing and structural use all need to be discussed and agreed in writing before you order — our products are otherwise intended for general decorative, hobby, organising, display and light practical use. Sometimes the honest answer is that 3D printing is the wrong process for what you're trying to do, and we'd rather tell you that up front than sell you a part that fails.
What it costs
Every job is quoted individually, because the same file can cost wildly different amounts depending on how it's printed. What moves the number:
- Size and print time — the biggest factor by a distance.
- Material used, including any support structures the shape requires.
- Infill and wall count — a display piece needs far less than a bracket that takes weight.
- Hand work — support removal and clean-up on fiddly geometry.
- Quantity — per-unit cost drops as the build plate fills up.
- Preparation — only if your file needs substantial work, and only after you've agreed to it.
All prices are in Australian dollars. Larger quantities take longer to print as well as costing less each — you'll get both numbers with the quote.
What we won't print
We don't design or print weapons, firearm parts, illegal items, medical devices, electrical safety parts, automotive safety parts, or load-bearing safety parts. We'll also decline anything we think is unsafe, unlawful, high-risk, infringing, or simply beyond what we can do well.
You'll also need the right to have the thing printed. When you send us a file, a sketch or a reference image, you're confirming it's yours or that you're allowed to have it reproduced. If you're not sure where a downloaded model sits, send us the link — or tell us about the licence or permission you've obtained — and we'll check before anything goes on the printer.
Your file, and what happens to it
We use your file to quote, prepare and produce your order. We don't sell customer files and we don't print them for anyone else. You can ask us to delete yours and we'll do that where practical — some records have to be kept for tax and dispute-resolution reasons.
Worth being clear about one thing before you order: you're buying the printed object, not a digital file. If we repair, modify or prepare a version of your model to make it printable, that prepared version stays ours unless we agree otherwise in writing before the job starts. Your original file remains yours, untouched. We keep the prepared version rather than supplying it, which is also what makes reorders quick — come back in a year and we can put the same job straight on the printer without starting over.
Turnaround and delivery
Custom jobs take longer than our catalogue products, because there's file work and approval in front of the printing. You'll get a dispatch estimate with your quote, and we'll tell you if quantity pushes it out.
We ship within Australia only, using Australia Post or a courier depending on the parcel. Tracking is provided where available. There's no local pickup at this stage.
Delivery time starts after dispatch and is an estimate, not a promise — that part is in the carrier's hands, not ours. If you need something by a particular date, say so when you send the file and we'll tell you honestly whether it's achievable. Full detail is in our Shipping Policy.
Common questions
Can I just send you an STL file to print?
Yes — that's exactly what this is. Attach it above with the quantity and colour you want, and we'll come back with a price.
How much does it cost to get something 3D printed in Australia?
It depends almost entirely on size and print time, which is why nobody sensible quotes a flat rate. A small organiser clip and a large enclosure come off the same printer with very different price tags. Send the file and you'll have a real number instead of a range.
Am I paying anything by submitting this?
No. This costs nothing and there's no payment step — it just gets your file and your brief to us in one piece so we can quote properly. You pay only if you accept the quote.
Can I send several parts at once?
Export them as a single 3MF or STEP file — both formats hold multiple parts, so an assembly still comes through as one upload. We don't accept ZIP files. If your set genuinely won't export as one file, email us a download link and we'll quote it that way.
What if I don't have a file at all?
We also design from ideas, sketches, measurements and reference images. Attach a photo or sketch instead of a model file, tell us what it needs to do and what it has to fit, and we'll quote the design work separately.
Can you print a model I downloaded?
Usually, but the licence matters. A model marked personal use only or non-commercial is normally fine for you to own and use. The grey area is us — we're a business being paid to reproduce it, and some designers state outright that print services may not use their models.
That said, the licence shown on a download page is only the default. If you've bought a commercial licence, subscribe to the designer's tier, or have their permission in writing, those terms apply instead of the badge. Tell us when you send the file and hang on to the receipt or the message. If you don't have permission and the licence rules us out, it's usually a quick note to the designer, who often says yes.
Can you print something bigger than your printer?
Yes. Large objects are split into sections, printed separately and joined. We handle the splitting — you don't need to do anything to the file first. It costs a bit more and leaves a join line, and we'll tell you upfront if the seam lands somewhere that matters.
Can you scale my model up or down?
Yes, though scaling isn't always as simple as it sounds — a model scaled down can end up with walls too thin to survive handling. We'll flag it if that's going to be a problem.
Can you print a replacement for a part that broke?
Often. Attach photos with a ruler or caliper in shot, along with the measurements that matter and where the part sits. If it's a safety, structural or load-bearing part, that has to be agreed with us in writing before you order.
What if the print fails partway through?
That's our problem, not yours. We reprint it. You're paying for a finished part, not for machine time.
Can I change or cancel after I've paid?
Ask us straight away and we'll tell you where the job is up to. Before preparation starts, usually yes. Once file work, slicing or printing has begun, a refund may be reduced to cover what's already been done. Details are in our Terms and Conditions.
About the printed finish
Everything is printed layer by layer, so expect fine layer lines and a subtle surface texture. That's the process, not a defect — and it's the same reason we can print your exact file in your exact colour instead of whatever a factory decided to mould ten thousand of.
Made to order from the file and instructions you supply. If your order arrives damaged, faulty, incorrect or not as described, contact us within 48 hours of delivery with your order number and photos of the item, the packaging and the shipping label, and we'll replace it or refund you.
Because each job is printed to your file and your instructions, we can't accept change-of-mind returns — including where the file turned out to be wrong, the scale was off, or the colour looked different on screen. That's why we check your file and confirm every detail in writing before anything is printed.
Fine layer lines, minor surface texture, small cosmetic variation and slight colour differences are normal characteristics of 3D printing and are not faults on their own.
